Attorney Mattern is a great example of the ridiculous pattern of being the most lenient state bar association in the nation. With a simple review of the facts associated to the repeated ethical violations of attorney Mattern and you find prescription drug issues, mental health issues, abandoning clients in the most extreme vulnerable legal jeopardy and even harassing opposing female attorney with text messaging all hours of the day and night. The only reasonable discipline for an attorney demonstrating such unhinged behavior would be PERMANENT DISBARMENT.
Arizona Attorney Paul J. Mattern suspended 6-months for breaking multiple rules involving multiple cases, including sending inappropriate text messages to female attorney
Paul J. Mattern
PHOENIX (CBS5) -
A Phoenix attorney has been suspended from practicing law for six months for violating the state bar's conduct code, which included allegedly sending unprofessional text messages.
The State Bar of Arizona said the investigation found that Paul J. Mattern sent the messages at an early hour to another attorney and also failed to meet court deadlines, failed to reasonably communicate with at least one client and did not appear for hearings while representing clients in post conviction relief matters.
Mattern was also ordered to pay $1,200 to the State Bar of Arizona for the investigation costs.
However, to really understand the totality of the egregious behavior of attorney Mattern, one needs only review the official findings detailing his conduct over multiple cases and circumstances relaeased as public records here: https://www.azcourts.gov/Portals/101/Agreement%20Mattern.pdf
It is worth noting that it was an Arizona Judge who initiated the state bar investigation due to being so alarmed by the conduct of attorney Mattern who was before the court with multiple cases, recognizing it demanded immediate attention.
If reinstated, he will be placed on probation for two years and will be required to participate in the Bar's Law Office Management Assistance Program (LOMAP).
